Don't know if this counts as a horror since it originally came out as a mystery novel, but one of my favorite books is Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera.

It's one of my favorites as well. I would consider it to be both a mystery and a horror novel, as many "supernatural" and horrific thing happen in it.

I've always contended that the book is better than the musical or any of the movies, though the 1989 film (starring Robert Englund of "Freddy Kruger" fame) is surprisingly good, with a heavy emphasis on supernatural horror and gore.

Spoiler Alert: Carlotta's head will roll. ;)
